Cameras#650

I thought of a new device system : Cameras and camera monitors !

Feedback monitor : this device allows you to watch what cameras see. See the picture attached to get a better idea of how I imagine the UI.
This would be better than the periscope, because while the periscope has a higher point of view, you can’t see much in details. The cameras would allow you to have a lot of points of view and angles, all accessible very quickly. You could also zoom with the cameras, to see what’s coming your way better, and while you don’t have a 360 vision degree like with the periscope, you can look around fairly well. (Use mouse to select the camera, and your movement keys to look up/down/left/right) You can have multiple monitors around your ship in order to access all the cameras all around your ship.

Cameras : You can place them in a lot of places around your ship, specifically on the outside ! There’s the small mounts above doors, but there’s also the panels, that are currently only used for lights ! (This was what originally started this idea : I found it weird how these panels can only be used for lights, when I feel like there’s more potential to them.) When someone is watching through a camera, this camera will have an indicator to signify that it’s working. Destroying cameras mean that you can’t watch through them anymore (…obviously.)
(Recipe uses sensors, since it looks like it has lenses. I guess it could craft two at a times to make it somewhat balanced. This would also make the cameras a T2 thing)

There could also be another device, a camera screen or something, that you could set to a specific camera, and it’ll broadcast what that camera sees all the time in the physical world, meaning you don’t need to interact with a UI to see through a camera.

I also thought that cameras could have the same mechanic that #644 suggests, which would give them even more use.

Looks like the screenshot randomly got a white border. Welp, why not, just don’t mind it lol.

Thank you for making me read -_- Anyway, this is a neat concept, I’ll see about bringing it up at some point.

I love the idea of letting Camera’s installed on Turret Modules give the watcher manual control over the turret, if they choose.

You brought up another interesting point, which was using those “Sensors” as parts in specific devices. Right now, you can use them (and other salvage parts) for research, you can recycle them, or… they pretty much just hog inventory space. It might be worth it to brainstorm a list of ideas of devices and gadgets that might USE specific parts. Another possibility is making it so those unique parts all can be used to create different upgrades/swappable mini modules for the planned player COGs/Drones. On the short list for Gadgets should be melee weapons, which should be simple to concieve… but devices, especially ones that can modify the functionality of modules would be critical in the future. It’s a whole new dimensional layer to the game that let’s the player really feel like they are engineering their ship to fit their preferences. You hint at putting Camera’s on Turrets… but the same node that might allow that could have other devices installed that might increase the firing speed of the turret, improve the distance of it’s shots, or give it some sort of shield or armor.

I wasn’t hinting at installing anything on turrets, actually ; they already seem to have some cameras mounted (the bright red lights). I assume that’s where you’ll see from when you use the turret control station, but that’s still limiting if you want to see from everywhere but don’t want turret modules everywhere.
But I’m definitely all up for using the COG components more, I’ve already got a post for it : #303. Yet devices and module upgrades of some kind are an interesting idea too, I’ll see if I come up with something.

Sounds good! im relieved this wasnt going to be a module suggestion haha, camera modules seem like a waste of space IMO

Along the lines of Cameras… what if Drillships had a “Blackbox” that let the player get a recording of the destruction of a drillship. This would be excellent where the player drillship was destroyed and they didn’t see how… but it would also be useful for generating mission content as players follow clues and investigate the wrecked drillships they are adding to the game. I’m thinking you could introduce players to Boss COGs by having them collect the Blackboxes from wrecked drillships that may not have been under COG control. It’s a fun way to do cinematics, anyway.

As with this community and their need to break things, Me included, I’m afraid that for performance reasons this is rejected for now, Further information will be discussed in the future but thank you for your idea.

Coming back to this after seeing the content of the next update - cameras sound very plausible now, just like how the gunner seat works ! (except you don’t shoot with your cameras…)
I hope this will be reconsidered at some point.
