A Reason to Do Things a Different Way#405

Once I found my strategy for this game, I never needed to deviate from it. I searched underground for resources, I didn’t really need to ever go to the surface, everything I can find there I can find just as easily underground. If I want to build something, I go to one of the solo caves. If I want to raid a ship I go to one of the duo caves. I didn’t need to search around and only pick one specific ship type, as they all tended to have everything I needed. So I’d drive around under ground, raid whatever ship is in the duo cave, retreat for the eruption, then rinse repeat over and over again until I had the resources to destroy the lava drill. Then, I’d rinse repeat that whole cycle until I’d beat the game.

I certainly could have changed my stratagey, but other than when I raided the tier 4 cog ship, I never needed to. (I was playing on hard, by the way) That raid was exciting, I enjoyed it similarly to how I enjoyed the start of the game. But the rest of it got old, I never had to do anything different.

I loved this game, but around the second lava drill everything started to feel the same. The status quo never really changed after that, I felt like I was just repeating the same actions over and over. It didn’t matter what kind of ship I was targeting, they were all basically the same. It didn’t matter which lava drill I was after, because other than the number of turrets nothing was different from the first one. Once I had decided on my strategy there was no enemy, no environment, no force that made me go, “Hmm, I need to change my plan to accomodate this”. The one thing that came close was the sheer number of COGS from the Tier 4 ships, but all I did for those was put my drillship underground.

They do know about the “repetitiveness”, and are working on many ways to fix it. For example, COGs are getting reworked for the next update and they’ll have different weapons with new ones each tier, meaning every tier will require a different strategy to attack ships but also defend yours.
There’s also going to be tanks added, lava sources are going to change and each one will be unique and require a specific strategy to destroy, etc…

I hope all that will help. My concern is that it will all be different versions of “shoot this thing that shoots back with varying damage, speed, and range.” They haven’t revealed exactly what the differences and new things will be yet (obviously), so I haven’t really seen anything drastically different from that formula yet. I do think that it’s possible though, they’ve made a strong game with some nice twists on the genre. Just have to wait and see I suppose!
