Basic character customization#216

While coop is live now, what about some character customization? It doesn’t have to be complex like, say, Elder Scrolls, but it would be nice to have a few hairstyles plus hair/skin shades and accessories like moustaches, sideburns, monocles, googles - I think that sort perfectly fit the steampunk formula. And female characters with few customization options (maybe not moustaches, tho).

This, 100% this. I’ve been holding off buying until I see this. Being able to at least choose your gender is really nice to have. I’ve been waiting for them to add this before buying. I’m into Space Engineers, Empyrion, and stuff like that. I’ve been following this game for a while, waiting for the right time to jump in.

Perhaps something like tophats and goggles and stuff for female characters.

Yeah a bit funny seeing ladies playing as guys. I play coop with my partner and it would be nice if theres a gender change and character customization.

I would also add that, at least a choice of characters, is underestimated in importance. It’s easy to view the feature as unimportant if someone that looks like you is the common starter. For everyone else, for those of us who tend to be under represented, it tends to be a much bigger deal.

Added some character customization mods in the latest Workshop Update: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/951440/view/4731586739614748468. Of course a proper character customization is still coming to the vanilla game. The mods are just a quick fix for someone who really wants to change the default char :)

?

Picking on one of the users that has wanted character customization a lot shows the devs are rather petty.

It’s such a common problem. Every time it happens it becomes clear that the team/studio/company that allows this view to represent them clearly does not care or take us seriously. Combine this with countless other examples of sexism of different levels, like what happened at Ubisoft when they attempted to make a female lead for AC Origin, but were struck down because of sexism, not even going to get into the more disgusting things that have happened in those companies. There’s a reason why we call this systemic. Is this really the same direction that this dev wants to head in?

Emphasizing that you can have it through a mod is, if anything, insulting. Being a woman is not a mod on a male body. This thread has also been around for quite a while and I don’t see any movement on this outside my gender being a mod. How many updates have past? Not even an apology for earlier or an official condemnination of the behavior. Don’t even get me started on nonbinary options since we can’t even get past this form of sexism or basic male favoritism.

@Jamie WTF are you smoking? Can I have some?

Devs choosing a male protagonist in a game is no more sexist than some other dev choosing a female one. Two sides of the same coin. That doesn’t make it sexist. (And yes, the decision in this case is binary since there’s no voice or anything else in there aside from outward appearance that indicates gender.)

Is Subnautica BZ sexist for having a female protagonist? That means I can’t play as male! There is no choice! Unfair! Sexist!

“Being a woman is not a mod on a male body.”
Do you really not understand how 3d models work?
This isn’t ‘modding’ the male body, it’s replacing it with a different model. Holy fuck!

So as it turns out, adding content to the base game is more important than if you’re character has boobs or not. Who knew?

The mod is a perfectly reasonable compromise.

“Emphasizing that you can have it through a mod is, if anything, insulting.”
Would you rather there was no mod? In the end, devs spent time and energy to give you the optional choice, and you just complain about something reasonable not being good enough.

The people calling devs sexist want the devs to be sexist SO BAD. I don’t get it. You tell them it’ll be a thing in the future, doesn’t matter, it’s not implemented now so it’s sexist. They make a mod in the meantime ? It’s sexist because it’s not in the vanilla game. They do content updates without mentioning women ? It’s sexist !
They hate sexism so much they want, they NEED to see it everywhere. I kid you not, I’ve seen it happen.

Also, bit of a personal note here, but why is it so bothering ? Can you physically not play a game if the character you play isn’t your gander or - dare I say it - skin color ? I guess some people might have an issue with it, but personnally, I don’t get it. I play and truly enjoy Tomb Raider, Subnautica BZ, Slime Rancher… Here in Volc, I understand the issue even less since all you see from the character is a hand and all you hear are “hmpf”s when you jump. Sure there’s more to it in MP, but then again… Mods exist, now.

So, no, a mod that does what you want is not sexism. Why would it be ? Unless you want it to be sexist…
No, the fact that it hasn’t been implemented even though the thread has been around for a while doesn’t mean it won’t happen… Some features have been planned for over 4 years, and we’re still waiting. it’s just that developing a game takes time, who would’ve guessed.
I would like to know what behaviour needed apologizing for.
Yeah, you seem to ignore everything that makes things not sexist. “The placeholder is a white male, so it’s sexist. We want a female character”. [Devs give female character in a mod] “It’s a mod, so it’s still sexist”. Okay. You do you.

My wife would also prefer not to appear as a dude in a beanie and sweatshirt. We are happy to run the mod for now until the devs can get to the point of looking at this. Hope they fix the wardrobe mod soon.

This really should have a higher priority. (The wardrobe mod was a suitable temporary fix, but apparently needs to be updated.)

Beyond just a matter of making the game more welcoming and comfortable to many potential players, having multiple character models in a multiplayer game is a basic necessity. Players should be able to visually distinguish between each other in group co-op play.
