Weapon modifications#17

Be able to add cosmetic and/or performance enhancing mods.
Maybe stuff like these:
-silencer to make it harder for COG to detect where you shot from.
-scope/laser/aimdot sight(would make more sense if a rifle is added, which I hope)
-different size clip/magazine
-Different barrels for shotgun to affect spread/range

One thing about the Crosshair Customization. It’s nothing to do with weapons - rather, it’s about the little tiny hard to see dot that determines the active object (what you use to select the boiler, buttons on controls, and so on).

This last post suggests entirely upgrading weapons into a new version, rather than modifying parts of them.

yeah, basically find secret POIs hidden deep in caves. get secret tech. use it to transform weapons into better versions of themselves:

Revolver into mauser type pistol, with bigger clip size, faster fire rate and dmg.

Double barrel into pump shotgun.

SMG into assault rifle

Gattling + hand mortar into automatic grenade launcher

Tesla gun into Tesla tower that fits top of Drillship and stuns any COG that gets too close, for ur towers to shoot them easily.

Can you please post some references on other games that have this system? The weapon modification can go from small adjustments to super complex. It would help us to get the idea of how large this feature could get.

Empyrion have something like that. U find in POIs parts for weapon type (laser weapon parts, assault rifle parts, etc.) and use those parts + Mk1 weapon to craft a Mk2 weapon, which has better stats.

So u need both - basic weapon and an upgrade item. And u can’t craft Mk2 without those rare parts.

Basically its just adding a new blueprint, that takes a weapon as part of required materials. Not like adding a mod to an existing weapon.

Generation Zero has a cool weap add on / mod system, but it would be cool to see here with the proper trade-offs for using the various mods

I really like deep rock galactic’s weapon system. It’s a bit more based on a class system which doesn’t exist in volcanoids, but a lot of the concepts could be applied. Basically leveling up a gun unlocks new perks for you to choose from on each level. At each level, the perks you can choose from can be swapped at will, but you can only have 1 selected per level. Also each of the perks on a level are pretty balanced with each other and aren’t selected based on which one is the “best” but rather which one fits your playstyle. All of the perks though are, for the most part, very small changes such as a 10% boost to damage, fire rate, or magazine size. The really cool weapon system in DRG though is the overclocks which are endgame. These overclocks provide anywhere from a really small buff, to a very large buff. But the large buffs, are counteracted by some other nerf proportional to the buff. Generally they are a slightly net positive, but they are more just focused on changing some fundemental characteristic of the weapon. Some are very simple and give you some extra ammo, some will turn your grenade launcher into a nuke launcher with insane kill potential but with only a third of the ammo, making it a high-risk, high-reward type weapon.
