Rare resources refining chance#1033

Just so we’re all on the same page, “rare resources” are sulfur, crystals and diamonds.
Here’s a little “challenge” I thought of that would make these resources a bit more unique, in addition to them being harder to get a hold of.

When refining an ore of these resources, there would be a chance that it gives you a refined resource, and a chance that it gives you nothing. Now of course, these wouldn’t be absolutely unfair chances, what I’m thinking is

  • Sulfur : 100% chance to refine
  • Crystal : 75% chance to refine
  • Diamond : 50% chance to refine

On the other hand, the refining speed of crystal and diamond would both have to be sped up a bit to make up for the resource loss.
These stats would have to be indicated in the ore’s description, of course. Might be nice if the captain also mentions it somewhere.

The main reason behind this idea is that these so-called “rare resources” aren’t that rare. You can find plenty. So in order to reduce the amount you get without reducing their amount on the map, this seems like a nice solution.

Now I can also see why some people wouldn’t like it. Ore only stacks to 10, so carrying half an inventory of diamond ore (150) only to get about 75 in the end… I can see that being annoying. But honestly, to me it doesn’t sound that bad.
I don’t know, what do you think ?

Just thought of another option that gets rid of the RNG aspect of this whole thing, but still makes getting those resources a bit harder : it’s simply to make it so that they require mutliple ores to make one refined resource. For example,

  • 1x Sulfur ore = 1x sulfur powder
  • 2x raw crystal = 1x crystal
  • 3x raw diamond = 1x diamond

Or if we want to remain more true to the original post :

  • 1x sulfur ore = 1x sulfur powder
  • 4x raw crystals = 3x crystals
  • 2x raw diamonds = 1x diamond

That last part sounds quite similar to #777, actually. Didn’t even plan that, heh.
